Short info:

SPACE KELLY - 3 Ecken 1 ElferNot so long ago, the cover song was an important part of how a band defined itself. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones came to prominence playing other people’s music. Where would the Fab Four be without “Twist & Shout”?
Now Space Kelly is here to reclaim the cover, with a collection of his personal favourite songs. Over the course of his career, Space Kelly has honed a lush pop style perfectly suited to his own compositions—but, as you’ll hear, also perfectly suited to handle other songwriters’ material. Already acclaimed for his own songs in Asia, America, and throughout Europe, it’s no wonder that he spans the globe so effectively here, taking in songs associated with California pop, Brazilian jazz, chanson and, of course, ‘60s Beat. One way Space Kelly makes these tunes his own is to rebuild them—some were piano-based, and Space Kelly reconfigures them for guitar; some were guitar-based, and Space Kelly arranges them for keyboard.

Many of the songs on this LP qualify as pop standards: “Leaving On A Jet Plane” was written by John Denver and popularized by Peter, Paul & Mary; Astrud Gilberto and Tony Bennett both took on “Who Can I Turn To”; Harpers Bizarre and Claudine Longet made versions of “Snow,” written by Randy Newman; Longet, along with Gilberto and Margo Guryan, have sung “Think Of Rain”; and the “Cheers” theme is one of the most familiar tunes in TV history.
Elsewhere Space Kelly tackles Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Clair,” Todd Rundgren’s “Be Nice to Me,” “Between Us” by Beatles spoof band the Rutles, Jonathan Richman’s “My Love Is A Flower,” the Beach Boys’ “Your Summer Dream,” and the Zombies’ “The Way I Feel Inside.” As for “Neon Rainbow,” the Box Tops made it famous, but, appropriately, they didn’t write it.
The result of this album’s musical fusion—Space Kelly’s unique, warm pop sensibility applied to the world-beating songs he loves—is a sparkling reminder of why covers were once so popular with audiences and musicians alike.

Especially in Asia Space Kelly can still count on a faithful following. “My Favourite Songbook” has already been released in Korea in January and in Japan, his fans are highly awaiting its release in early March.
